Clif Zbar Goblin Chocolate Chip: $0.69/Kroger

clifzbar_chocchip-4I ate a Clif Z Bar Goblin Chocolate Chip last year and felt the same way then as I do now – it’s no different than a regular Clif Chocolate Chip bar, just with the addition of spooky graphics on the wrapper and Goblin in its name. At least make it a seasonal flavor, like dot the top of the bar in orange and yellow like candy corn, or here’s a crazy thought that I’m sure will never catch on – add some pumpkin spice flavoring to it. Those scary goblins and their chocolate chips. I love Zbars and other than them not having the occasional burst of caffeine or added protein of their big brother Clif bars, they’re half the size and half the calories (and around 1/3 less the cost) making them much more appealing to me for myself and the girlies.

10 years ago, our neighborhood’s driveways were full of young parents like Tom and I, doling out full sized candy and reaching into dry-ice swirling coffin coolers to share a beer with the other Moms and Dads toting costume-clad infants. Joanna was a 3-month old chili pepper in her spicy red bunting that was filled with dookie after only making it to the end of our street. I still had the opportunity to score some candy, sip a sidewalk beer and encourage choruses of “awww” with her before calling it an early night. Z-bars may not have existed back then and costumes may have been much more innocent¬† of theme, but there’s always a new crop of young parents ready to share a drink with us old timers.¬† 2/5
